Heart-Hand

Chosen, Unchosen

Chosen, Unchosen

A choice: safety or risk?

Weighed, decided,
her English degree
rolled into a cardboard
tube and stashed in her
closet with her journals.

Her choice made, lived with.

Regret wastes her time;
resignation drags her
downstream, face just
above water's tugs,
weighed by expectations.

Each day she could choose anew.

In her dreams, she fills
her abandoned journals
with poetry, stories, joy;
during her waking hours,
she pretends all is well.

In her dreams, undeath is unchosen.
